Swedish transport authority Västtrafik, which serves Gothenburg and the surrounding region, has chosen Ridango to provide validators and a Contacless Bank Card adoption (cEMV). Västtrafik, responsible for public transport in the Västra Götaland region, serves over 444,000 customers daily across buses, trains, trams, and boats. The upcoming project will include replacing 8,000 validators with a focus on replacing closed loop equipment.

Next generation ticketing comes to Västtrafik

Carl Järsberg, Ridango Sweden Country Manager, commented that this update will significantly impact Swedish public transport by modernizing the public transit in the second-largest region. It is truly inspiring to collaborate with an organization like Västtrafik, which has a strong track record of working with development and innovation. Their experience and openness to new solutions make them an ideal partner in bringing the next generation of ticketing to passengers.

Replacing closed loop equipment

They primary focus for Västtrafik is on replacing closed loop equipment, transitioning from CBT (card-based ticketing) to an ID-based system and securing revenue. With the help of Ridango Västtrafik will also have the possibility of expanding their open loop system. With open loop payment, there’s no need for a physical ticket. The payment card or mobile device acts as the ticket. Charges can be applied during the trip, after the journey, or at the end of the day based on actual travel. For operators, this means no more handling cash or selling tickets manually, which enhances service and speeds up boarding.

Ridango self-service validator

Self-service validator is a sleek device that can be installed on various public transport vehicles. It reads and validates a range of contactless smart cards and mobile tickets, including NFC-enabled bank cards, EMV-compliant smart cards, and QR code-based mobile tickets.
The device features a 7″ high resolution color touch screen, providing clear and
intuitive instructions to passengers.
